The short answer for a Hudson Valley home: twice a year, and the fall visit belongs in November, not October. Most homeowners clean too early, watch the oaks refill the gutters three weeks later, and go into winter with the one problem a gutter cleaning exists to prevent. Here is the timing that actually works in Dutchess County, what it costs to get it wrong, and what a real cleaning includes.
Why November, Not October
The maples go first. By the middle of October most of them are bare, the gutters look full, and it feels like time. But the oaks that shade the typical lot in Hyde Park, Pleasant Valley or Millbrook hold their leaves into the second half of November, and some drop right through the first snow. A gutter cleared on October 10 is packed again by Thanksgiving, and that second load is the one that sits there wet, freezes, and does the damage. The right window is after the oaks are down and before the first run of hard freezes: in most years, the middle two weeks of November.
Two exceptions. Pines and hemlocks drop needles all year, and needles mat into a felt that water cannot get through, so a property under evergreens does better with a third visit in early October and the main one in November. And a house with gutter guards can usually run on the November visit alone, as long as the tops of the guards are cleared along with the trough.
What Happens When You Wait
Ice dams. Gutters packed with wet debris going into winter give roof meltwater nowhere to go. It refreezes at the eave, builds a ridge, and pushes the next round of meltwater backward under the shingles. That is how a ceiling stain shows up in February on a house with a perfectly good roof. Clean gutters in November are the cheapest ice dam insurance there is.
The foundation. A blocked gutter does not hold water; it redirects it over the edge and straight down against the foundation. In the freeze-thaw cycle we get from December to March, that water works into hairline cracks, freezes, expands, and widens them. Basement water repairs run into the thousands.
The fascia. Wet debris stays wet. It holds moisture against the fascia board behind the gutter, and over a few seasons that board softens, rots, and stops holding the gutter. At that point the bill is carpentry, new gutter and paint, not a cleaning.
The gutters themselves. A full gutter that freezes solid weighs several times what it was hung to carry. Sections pull loose from the fascia, hangers bend, and a seam that opens in January leaks all spring.

Signs Your Gutters Are Already Overdue
Water sheeting over the front edge in a steady rain. Dark vertical streaks on the siding below a gutter seam. Icicles along the eave in winter, or a lip of ice on the gutter edge. A downspout that trickles during a downpour. Mulch or soil washed out in a line under the roof edge. Plants growing out of the trough. A section that sags or sits lower than the one next to it. Any one of these means the gutters have already been overflowing for a while, and the cleaning should be scheduled now rather than at the next planned visit.
Gutter Guards Change The Schedule, Not The Answer
Guards keep the big leaves out, and on a house under maples they earn their keep. What they do not stop is pine needles, shingle grit, seed pods and the fine debris that builds on top of the mesh and inside the trough behind it. A guarded system that is never serviced eventually clogs at the guard, and because the guard is the high point, the water sheets over the top of the whole run instead of finding a low spot. Guards stretch the schedule from twice a year to once. They do not end it.
What A Professional Gutter Cleaning Includes
Gutters and downspouts cleared end to end, not just the trough you can see from the ground. The debris leaves with us, not in a bag on the lawn. Every downspout is confirmed to be draining, and if one is emptying into a blocked underground line, you hear about it instead of finding out in the spring. Your roof, siding and landscaping get the same care as the gutters. You get a firm price in writing before we start, no hourly billing, and a licensed, fully insured crew. That is the whole gutter cleaning service, and it is the reason the job costs more than a neighbor with a ladder and less than the repairs it prevents.

Pair It With The Roof Or The House
Late fall is also the last comfortable window for exterior cleaning before the season closes, and the same visit that clears the gutters can handle the rest of the house. A roof soft wash takes the black streaks off the shingles and the gutters are cleared afterward, so both are clean on the same day. A house wash in October or early November sends the house into winter clean instead of green. Each additional service on the same visit comes in at a package rate, and the maintenance plan on our packages and plans page puts the spring and fall gutter visits on the calendar so they stop depending on memory.
Book The November Visit Now
The right window is short and it fills. Send us your address and a photo of the front of the house and you will have a firm number, usually the same day, with the visit scheduled for after the oaks come down. Request a quote or call (845) 709-9443.
Gutter Cleaning Timing FAQ
In the Hudson Valley, November. Maples finish dropping in October, but the oaks that shade most Dutchess County lots hold their leaves into mid or late November, and a gutter cleaned in early October is full again by Thanksgiving. Book the fall visit after the oaks are down and before the first stretch of hard freezes.
Twice a year for most homes: once in late spring, after the seed pods and pollen, and once in late fall after the oaks drop. A property under heavy tree cover, especially pines, benefits from a third visit in mid-autumn.
Only when they are not frozen. Once wet debris freezes into the trough it cannot be cleared without damaging the gutter, and by then the ice dam it causes is already forming. If the fall visit was missed, the next safe window is the first thaw, and the roof edge should be watched for ice in the meantime.
No. Guards keep out the big leaves, but pine needles, shingle grit and seed pods build up on top of the mesh and inside the trough. A guarded system that is never serviced eventually clogs at the guard itself, and water sheets straight over the top. Guards stretch the schedule; they do not end it.
It depends on the linear footage of gutter, the number of stories, the roof pitch and how much is in there. Every job is quoted at a firm price in writing before we start, with no hourly billing, and gutters added to a house wash or roof cleaning on the same visit come in at a package rate.
After. A roof cleaning sends whatever was on the shingles into the gutters, so on a combined visit the gutters are cleared last and you end up with a clean roof and clean gutters on the same day.
